Gorgeous vintage rustic pottery covered saucepan from soufflenheim, alsace. Soufflenheim pottery has been made for hundreds of years by craftsmen with clay extracted from the quarries of haguenau. The yellow-ochre colour inside the pottery is the natural colour of the clay. Each piece of pottery was manufactured and painted by hand, and therefore imperfections are common.
That's what makes them so attractive. The set is in excellent condition.
There's a small rough area on one side of the lid knob where the glaze is chipped off, and an indent on the other side of the knob which is original to the piece, as it's glazed with no clay colour showing. Only some very light crazing on the lid. The width of the pan is 6 1/4 wide by 3 high, plus the lid.
The pieces in my collection were never used for cooking - they were display pieces only. If you want to use it to cook with, it should be immersed overnight in cold water (for occasional use) or pour hot milk into it for about an hour (if you want to use it more often).
As with any clay cookware, avoid any thermal shock (extreme temperature change from cold to hot). In france soufflenheim pottery is advertised as being oven, dishwasher and microwave safe. As this is a vintage piece, i would hand wash to be on the safe side. See my other listings for more soufflenheim pottery.
In this pretty blue collection i have a matching large covered oval casserole dish and a large open pie dish. This item is made of ceramic.
