This is quite a unique copper sauce pan or ladle with a sturdy long copper handle. It dates back to the 18th century in france and is a great demonstration of the variation and creativity that come from handmade copper pots and pans like this at the time. This is a quality piece due to the thickness of the copper (over 2mm thick) which makes it heavy and sturdy. This is an intricate piece due to its shape, pouring beak, long vertical handle and beautiful seaming marks. In traditional french cuisine, sauce is the foundation from which everything else is built on top.Making a good sauce is therefore the basis for much of the cuisine at the time. A copper sauce pan like this would have been used to make sauces or soups. Known as "saucière" in french it could have been used to cook sauces in small quantities or used as a ladle.
Today you could also cook with it, but you would likely need to have it tinned again. Equally charming would be to use it as a decorative item set in a rustic house, kitchen or fireplace. What makes this piece unique (assembly, condition). The uniqueness of the long handle makes this piece rare and interesting and charming all at once.
